Dr. Rajendra Prasad was founded this hospital on march 10th 1967 as a National center for ophthalmic science, to provide state of the art patient care, expand human resources for medical education and undertake research to find solutions to eye health problems of national importance. In 1976, Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy has established Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai. Venkataswamy was born on 1 October 1918 in a village Vadamalapuram, which is 80 km far from Madurai city, Tamil Nadu State, India.
In 1944, he received his medical degree from Stanley Medical College, Chennai. He served four years in the Indian Army Medical Corps. Initially, this hospital was started service with an 11-bed facility, Today this hospital is available at 14 locations.
